The action of drawing with a brush saturated with sumi-e ink or with a lightly held stick of conté crayon is challenging and freeing. There are no more brooding thoughts about how to define the shell in a precise way. The form is captured in simple terms. What does that say about the shape, about the texture? One drawing after another of the same shell is rendered over and over quickly. Did I find its essence in automatic gestures? As an ongoing practice, the action limbers the body and opens the mind to the key elements. I need this deviation from the more concentrated efforts of the Shells.
