Studio Life – Grace Howl – Sarasota

Grace Howl’s story begins when she came to making art later than usual in life. A few years back, she suffered a severe trauma during an accident. This event changed her and the life she knew. While healing, a visual language which had laid dormant was awakened. This awakening opened the door into the next phase in her life as an artist. Not only does she have far reaching ideas in her installation work, she is at home painting intuitively on large canvases.

view of studio

Grace’s studio is located in an industrial area just north of downtown Sarasota. Studio envy set in as I stepped through the threshold into a towering 20 foot wide by 40 foot long room with clear story windows that bath the entire space with abundant diffused light. An entire corner is filled with shelves that are jammed with diverse brushes, squeegees, spackling knives, paint and other paint materials.

Work surfaces as well as floors take on their own unexpected compositions from spillage and marks that pass over the edge of the canvas.

This is a small sampling of Grace’s collection of brushes, squeegees, spackling knives and miscellaneous painting tools.

storage racks

Despite plenty of storage, there is never enough space even in this large studio for either paintings in progress or completed works.
