PERSONALITY: I Love the Color Red

Have you ever had a strong reaction to a specific color? If so, what was it?

As an artist…I frequently gravitate towards specific colors, exploring their potential to add depth and dimension to my artwork. While this might imply I have favorite colors, it's not always the case in my creative process.

Color preference

When my grandson saw the "Red" drawing, he was captivated by it. Intrigued, I asked him what drew him to it. His simple reply, "I love the color red," made me ponder how our responses to color can unveil facets of our personalities. Through his perspective, I glimpsed how his affection for the boldness of red mirrored his boundless energy and zest for life. In his mid-20s, he embraces spontaneity, adventure, and passion, and his fondness for this vibrant hue embodies his lively personality. Could something as straightforward as a color preference offer insights into one's identity?

Do you have a favorite color?

Do you have a favorite color? Is your wardrobe filled with it? Are your walls painted with it? Have you ever wondered if your strong preference for a particular color reflects your unique personality traits? Have you taken the time to explore and understand your character, uncovering certain defining features about yourself? Yes, there are many questions, but this is such a fun subject to talk about.

It's fascinating that something as simple as color preference can offer insight into who we are. Beyond the symbolic meanings attached to each color, how individuals respond to color adds a unique layer of significance. Experiencing specific colors can shift our attitudes and influence our reactions, evoking fond memories or stirring up uncomfortable feelings.

What does color preference say about us?

I love the color blue, and my wardrobe reflects that. Does that mean I am trustworthy and responsible? I also like orange, but I would never wear it. Does that mean I'm enthusiastic and optimistic? I painted my apartment walls terracotta and lived with this color for nearly a decade and a half. I still wear black frequently because it is slimming. Does that make me sophisticated and elegant? There are colors I like and those I don't. I enjoy colors that match an object well. For example, there are specific colors I don't like for cars, and some colors go better with the design of a pair of shoes. I also appreciate a work of art where the artist has mastered the right color relationships to convey their ideas.

You aren't limited to your favorite color. Like me, you have colors you like and those you don't. Some people have such strong feelings about specific colors that they avoid them entirely in their homes, from furnishings to artwork. Our complex personalities can be reflected in our color preferences.

Symbolic color characteristics

Have you ever wanted to know more about the symbolic characteristics of colors? Is there a deeper meaning behind your likes and dislikes? Can we explore more questions and find more answers? Since colors carry meanings, our responses to particular colors can reveal much about our personalities. We are, after all, a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

Individual colors symbolize various characteristics. Here are some examples related to five drawings in the "Revealed Faith" series:

  • Purple: Fantasy, justice, royalty, imagination, mystery, art, and spirituality.
  • Orange: Enthusiasm, optimism, freedom, originality, emotion, and pleasure.
  • Yellow: Joy, fun, warmth, positivity, clarity, curiosity, and happiness.
  • Black: Power, sophistication, strength, formality, protection, elegance, prestige, and authority.
  • Red: Adventure, action, energy, strength, passion, excitement, and love.

So, what is your favorite color? Are there colors you like and colors you don't? Reflecting on all this, are you aware of your intrinsic personality traits? How much do you know about yourself? Do you pause to think about the characteristics you want and don't? Do you strive to be your best self using your best character traits?

Returning to the premise of the first drawing, "Purple," discussed in the first story, "Red" is a piece without an attached personal narrative. However, I love this drawing for its dynamic composition, the interplay of colors, and the contrast between the letter shapes. It's a visual dance between reds, greens, and yellow ochres. Which colors move forward, and which recede within the activity of the overlapping shapes? This question guided my thoughts as I worked on this drawing.

FAITH: Diverse Meanings and the story of Revealed Faith: The Stories behind the Story

Many of you will immediately associate the word "faith" with religion when asked what it implies. Faith is more than just a standard concept. Based on life experiences, it has many meanings. I'll tell you the story behind "Revealed Faith" after recounting a story a graduate art student shared. It is about a positive self-discovery despite losing faith in her best friend. She believed this awful circumstance had a silver lining, so she trusted me with the tale and permitted me to share it.

During graduate school, two graduate students (I'll call them Susan and Mary) had grown close. They were about to complete their MFAs when...

REVEALED FAITH STATEMENT: The big story behind all the drawings

Fascinated by how we conceal or reveal ourselves, I ask, who are we, and how much do we hide from the world? The question has been at the heart of my recent artwork, inspired by the history of the Crypto-Jews during the Inquisition. These individuals continued to practice their true faith in secret, using their ingenuity to avoid detection by the authorities. It’s intriguing how they concealed their religious practice and how clues were revealed to those who knew where to look.

However, this is just one example of how people have historically hidden their true selves. Even in modern times, many still need to mask their identities, fearing persecution or rejection. It’s a painful reality that so many of us hide who we are.

In my artwork, I explore the tension between concealing and revealing my own identity as a Jew. How much should I disclose, and what should remain veiled? In my drawings, I embed Hebrew words that are partially concealed within abstract environments. These symbols serve as a metaphor for how we all hide aspects of identity while providing a subtle hint to those who know where to look.

Ultimately, I hope my art will encourage others to feel more comfortable expressing their true selves. Whether we conceal or reveal our identities, we all have a unique story to tell, and we must find the courage to share it with the world.
